We were at Melanie's on Sunday, March 21 for dinner. We were greeted by Madeleine, our server, who made us feel very welcome. we had our choice of seating, but we were glad to have come when we did, as it filled up soon. Melanie, the owner, soon visited our table to welcome us(the other couple, our son and daughter-in-law had been there before, and are regulars). We had the soup, salad, lamb and steak(we shared!). It was the best meal we have ever had in Toronto! The meat was perfectly cooked the potatoes were delicious the dessert(papaya swirl) was very tasty and decadent(thanks, Melanie!). We ended with a cappuccino that will knock your socks off! It is a small, intimate bistro where you feel part of the family and where Melanie will share her favourite meals with you. We will be back again!

We really enjoyed our brunch. The restaurant is very low key and simple with cute art and mellow jazzy music.

The eggs benny was fantastic and the turkey wrap and salad was generous and fresh tasting. Home-made fries were to die for. We saw someone order the squash soup before we left and took it to go, it was Fantastic!

I came with my husband and two boys and there were smiles and full bellies when we left! A wonderful experience, great atmosphere, excellent service, and Melanie came around to make sure we were doing fine. The desserts were to die for and i understand that Melanie bakes these herself - it was a real pleasure being there and look forward to an evening where we can go again! Well done!

A long list made for a very disappointing Sunday Brunch so I'll just rifle them off on bullet points

*Mid-morning with only about half the tables occupied but waited well over 5 minutes to be noticed by staff.
*Was only noticed by staff when I finally approached the bar and asked if we could have a menu at our table.
*Began sweating as the room was extremely over-heated.
*Of the approximately six brunch items on the menu, two were unavailable. One item is poor planning, but two on such a limited menu is just poor kitchen management.
*After ordering I noticed that my friend and I were stretching every conversation we could since our food was taking so long. We were then visited by the waitress who casually told us it was on it's way, as though waiting so long for an omelet and french toast was normal.
*I recall they were small portions. Either $10 or $12 for TWO pieces of french toast with no accompaniment. This must be damn good toast.
*Well NO! Soggy. As though partially baked bread had been sitting in egg for far too long, encrusted with corn-flakes (as though that made it special or just to hide reality) and then flash heated in the pan. DISGUSTING!!! It took twenty minutes to produce this??

The only thing they did right was comp the French Toast. Why did I leave a tip. One, because it was only $1.50, and two, I grew up in restaurants and am a professional pastry chef. I hate not leaving at least something. But on this day no one deserved a thing.

Can't hold a candle to Toast on Queen, Cora's, or even somewhere as mundane as The Sunset Grill. A word of advice Start with the basics and get those right, then move on.

The prices are reasonable in their own right ... and then the food arrives, at which time you realize that the prices are fantastic for meals of THIS calibre.

The first time I ate at Melanie's, the food was outstanding and presented artfully. The only thing lacking was a little decor. When I visited last night, not only was the food fantastic once again, the walls were alive with large vibrant paintings. It is now the perfect restaurant. I'll return soon.

This restaurant is a gem! The food is amazing. Every item I've tried has had a delicate, delicious flavoring distinct enough to make it unique yet never overpowering. The butter chicken melts in your mouth, the talapia special was out of this world. Then there are the deserts - oh, the deserts - made on premise by Melanie herself. Melanie's friendliness and her courteous and efficient staff make this bistro warm and comfortable. Fresh ingredients = great cuisine. Go, go there as fast as you can!

Great freindly service without being annoying, casual but not the area's typical casual, amazing food, great prices and just around the corner. Thank you so much we really need this in the area.

Finally a decent place in the Woodbine-Danforth area! We've been there a few times now and we'll be returning often. I love their Chicken Fusilli in a light cream sauce ($14). The chicken pieces are large, plentiful and succulent. The sauce is loaded with carmelized onions, julienned red peppers with an exquisite blend of flavours including curry and corriander. It may not sound that special but the delicate blending of these complex flavours is exceptional. I haven't had a better pasta dish in a great many years. Also the walnut caramel cheesecake at only $5 is divine. The decor is clean and comfortable but a little spartan so we weren't expecting this level of culinary execution. This is a real sleeper.

We are SO delighted to have a restaurant of this calibre in our neighbourhood. I've eaten there breakfast, lunch and dinner and never been disappointed. The chef shows real attention to detail. Even the salad dressings and soups, for example, are made with skill and delicacy--nothing from a bottle or tin. Try Melanie's croissants at breakfast...the oatmeal brule...the feather light peach crumble cake...at lunch, the shrimp BLT...at dinner, the flavourful pastas and butter chicken. All for such reasonable prices. I hope Melanie's will be around for many many years to come.

2008-03-18 13:20:49

Wow, what a find! I'm eating my way through the entire menu. Top-rate food, friendly atmosphere...all for local-prices. For brunch, try Melanie's pecan/cornflake encrusted french toast, the Newfoundland breakfast with crab cakes, or maybe the oatmeal brulee. Lunches and dinners are equally impressive Chicken tikka wrap, warm rice salad, gourmet pastas, sirloin steak. Great international wine list. Fantastic desserts are made on site by a pastry chef in the name of Melanie herself. Mornings and lunches have a relaxed neighbourhood feel....dinners feel cozy and somewhat grand with the night-time lightening and candles reflecting off the rich wood table tops. I've been to Melanie's 7 times now, and I'll be going back many times more....

Last week, we went for brunch and the place crowded. We had to wait for our turn. Finally we got seats, we ordered for their famous breakfast Newfoun-----------.It was very good and also the wraps and the coffee was excellent. Price was very affordable. This place is something that if you go one time, you would want to dine there again.
